Lubbock Master Gardeners are members of the local community who take an active interest in their lawns, trees, shrubs, flowers and gardens. They are enthusiastic, willing to learn, willing to teach, and interested in helping others. Master Gardeners are able to communicate with diverse groups of people.
What really sets Master Gardeners apart from other home gardeners is their special training in horticulture. In exchange for their training, persons who become Master Gardeners contribute time as volunteers, working through their cooperative extension office to provide horticultural-related information to their communities.
Meetings are held the first Tuesday each month 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm at the Breedlove Dehydration Plant 1818 N. Martin Luther King Blvd. (MLK and the North Loop). Map
Lubbock County Master Gardeners was organized in 1992. The organization is a member of the Texas State Master Gardeners Association and the Lubbock Council of Garden Clubs.

Becoming a Master Gardener
The Master Gardener course is offered once a year beginning in mid January. Classes are held on Tuesday and Thursday at the Extension Office. These are taught by a variety of individuals who have expertise in specialized areas. An application must be submitted and evaluated before you can be accepted into the Master Gardener program. In addition, there is a fee of $160 to cover the cost of course materials and a background check (since you may be working with children). Master Gardener interns are issued a comprehensive three-ring binder filled with material that will be used in the course.For initial certification Master Gardeners must complete 50 volunteer hours within one year of the coursework. Ten of these hours should be spent working at the Education Garden along with current Master Gardeners. This allows interns to observe current gardening techniques and to get acquainted with other Master Gardeners.
Maintaining Certification
To maintain certification, Master Gardeners must complete 12 hours of volunteer or teaching hours and 6 continuing education hours every year.
