Summer PSA Water/Grass Notes
- Management and understanding of turf irrigation is important. Do not water so much that water runs off your landscape. Wasted water benefits no one! Contact the City of Lubbock Education Team at 775-2589 or Texas Extension at 775-1680.
- Fescue is a cool season grass which can grow in shade in Lubbock. Above normal heat is responsible for fescue going dormant. Going dormant doesn’t mean it dies. Only extended dry conditions cause plant death. Applying 1 ½” of water per week keeps the roots alive.
- Narrow strips of turf between sidewalk and street are turning brown. These sites are notorious for suffering from compacted soil, heat intensified by the concrete and asphalt, and exposure to exhaust pollution. Replacing this grass with appropriate ground cover (Texas SmartScape) and mulch will take the abuse and require less maintenance (which translates to energy savings).
- Deep watering, 1 ½” per week is normally sufficient to maintain an actively growing turf. Deep watering is considered to be 6-8” deep. Some areas, especially sloped areas, may require cycling the system with short applications and allowing time for the water to soak into the landscape between irrigating to prevent water runoff. These applications should occur on the same day.
- Thatch build up prevents water from penetrating the soil deeply. Over watering and excessive fertilization contribute to thatch build up. Once formed, thatch must be physically removed. Aerating the soil helps moisture penetrate deeply and aid deep root growth. Deep root growth makes for a healthier turf, particularly one that can withstand temporary heat stress and drought.
- Fertilize during a cool part of the day and preferably before regular watering. Always follow manufacturer directions for fertilizer handling and use. Slow release fertilizer is best.
- The Water Ordinance restricts watering between 10 AM and 6 PM. This is a more efficient use of water since it avoids high evaporation losses during the heat of the day. Lubbock’s low humidity makes it possible to water lawns even during the night.
- Avoid watering any time high wind conditions occur. High winds waste water by evaporation.

- New lawns are allowed 3 weeks exemption from the Water Ordinance time restriction in order that root systems can become established. However, water runoff is still not permitted. Use only enough water to keep the grass moist during this time.
