The park committee just received a grant of $9,500.00 to put toward the irrigation system. This will be enough to run drippers to all the trees, stub-outs to our flowerbeds, a line to the drinking fountain, and sprinklers for about one of the four acres (the area up front). We'll be using a contractor to put this in starting around the 1st of July. This will be key to the success of our gardening efforts so I'm very happy it's in motion and funded. We'll also use some of that money for the drip system in our beds.
Everyone continues to tell me that they're saving plants. Hopefully they're all doing well. I've had some computer problems recently and lost my list so here's what I remember: If you're not on here and you have plants set aside, please let me know and I'll add you to the list.
--Kay Carpenter: (3) Shasta Daisy, (2) Coreopsis, (1) Yarrow
--Andy: (4) Autumn Sage, (2) grasses, (25) Red Yucca seedlings
--Cecelia: (2) Stella d'Oro Daylilies, (5) Autumn Joy Sedums (2) Hamlin Grasses
--Ed: (several) Canna
When we met at the park last, we talked about the shade structure being an L-shape. The structure is still that shape, but it will now sit on a square pad. This means we'll put a single path in between the entrance and the shade structure allowing us put 2 Desert Willows and several boulders in instead of 1 Desert Willow and a boulder. We also have our plan nearly finalized for the entrance and it will have spots for 3 small flowerbeds. These beds will have certain areas that require plants that get no taller than 12". If any of you have any suggestions, please let me know. I have sketches of the areas, and will bring them with me to the next MG meeting because I think the big files I attach are part of the reason some of you aren't getting my e-mails.
As far as the boulders, we have a gentleman in NM that has a caliche pit filled with boulders and he said we can have as many as we want. He'll also provide a truck and trailer to haul them. We have the equipment here to unload and place them and as soon as we can lock on equipment in NM to load them, we'll go get as many as we can. I've seen some pictures and they look like they're pretty large--great for seating and jumping off of. If any of you have any other contacts for rocks or boulders, we have 4 acres to put them in and probably can't get too many.
All of you are invited to attend any of our committee meetings. We have them about once a month and the next is this Thursday the 21st from 7 to 8pm. They're in a home near the park. I don't know where this Thursday's will be yet.
Other things that have been happening at the park that you might be interested in: -Our park benches and trash cans are installed.
-Our basketball standard is up.
-We found a man who owns a saw mill who is donating all the lumber for the bridge over the drainage strip, and for the shade structure.
-I just put (4) 7-gallon Afghan Pines in at the park this weekend, and have (7) 5-gallon Keteleer Junipers to put in when the irrigation goes in.
-We've had 2 successful fundraisers in the last month and several other donations that have helped to complete the funding for the entrance and shade structure. We also have a concrete company giving us a great deal on concrete and we're just looking for someone to do the labor.
